Flip To Organic - Pancake Day
Organic pancakes – How do they stack up?
Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday has been celebrated in the UK for centuries. Traditionally, pancakes were eaten on this day to use up rich, indulgent foods like eggs and milk before the 40-day fasting season of Lent began. You don’t have to be taking part in Lent to enjoy a pancake or two on the 28th but you can make a difference when it comes to the ingredients you use. So what makes our core pancake ingredients - organic milk, eggs and flour different to their non-organic counterparts?
Food as it should be
Organic food comes from trusted sources. When you see the organic symbol, you can be sure what you buy has been produced to the highest animal welfare and environmental standards.
Organic always means:
- Fewer pesticides
- The highest standards of animal welfare
- No routine use of antibiotics
- GM Free
- No artificial colours & preservatives
So let's break it down......
Find out what makes our core pancake ingredients - organic eggs, flour and milk different and why you should #FlipToOrganic this pancake day.
Organic chickens are raised to organic standards, which not only means free-range, but a whole lot more. Organic standards don't just cover the animals housing and the amount of space they have, but also the way they are treated, what they are fed and how they are transported and eventually slaughtered.
Glyphosate, the most widely sold weedkiller in the world is making its way into our food chain and into us. Glyphosate is one of three pesticides regularly found in routine testing of British bread, appearing in up to two-thirds of wholemeal bread samples tested by the Defra Committee on Pesticide Residues in Food.
Organically produced milk comes from happier, healthier, free-range and grass-fed cows. Recent research has shown the way the animals are raised and what they eat has an impact on the nutritional quality of the milk they produce.
