Extension of derogations and COI waiver
Defra plans to extend two exceptional production rules (derogations), and a waiver for COIs for organic products imported from the EU, EEA and Switzerland.
Derogations
Defra plans to extend two exceptional production rules (derogations) that are due to expire in Great Britain on 31 December 2026. These derogations allow the:
use of maximum of 5% non-organic protein feed in pigs (under 35kg) and poultry (under 30 weeks of age), and
use of non-organically reared pullets up to 18-weeks of age in organic egg production
Defra will be extending these derogations from 31 December 2026 until a minimum of 1 June 2027. We will be in touch when Defra provides a definitive date.
Certificate of Inspection (COI) waiver
The UK has been reviewing the current waiver for Certificates of Inspection for organic products imported from the EU, EEA and Switzerland, which is due to expire on 1 February 2027.
Defra plan to extend the waiver until the UK-EU SPS agreement enters into force, meaning COIs would continue not to be required for imports from EU, EEA and Switzerland.
