We will be hosting a series of webinars late in 2026 and in early 2027 to share new information, answer questions and gather feedback from businesses navigating the SPS alignment changes.

Significant changes for the organic sector

In autumn 2027, the UK is expected to introduce EU Organic Regulation 2018/848, bringing significant changes for the entire UK organic sector. The new rules will affect all certified organic businesses, including farmers, growers, feed and seed suppliers, and food and drink producers, regardless of whether they trade with the EU.

These changes form part of the wider UK-EU agri-food agreement, which aims to create a UK-EU Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Zone. The SPS agreement is designed to streamline the movement of agri-food products between the UK and EU by reducing border delays, administration and associated costs. Further information is available on the government website.

Organic production is included within the scope of the agreement. Although some elements are still being negotiated, Defra has confirmed that the UK will dynamically align with EU Organic Regulation 2018/848, meaning the UK will implement this regulation.

Support from Soil Association Certification

As the sector prepares for full implementation in 2027, many businesses are likely to need to make a significant number of changes. To support our organic clients through the transition, we are working closely with Defra, sharing industry feedback and seeking clarification as it becomes available.

Alongside this work and our series of webinars, we are creating an online resource hub to provide the latest updates and guidance.
