Organic products are incredibly popular in Australia, with demand growing consistently year on year. The Australian Organic Market Report 2019 revealed local demand for certified organic products is skyrocketing with $1.93 billion dollars generated in domestic sales for 2018 across a wide range of products. The figure is up $256 million from domestic sales of $1.67 billion for 2017 with the total Australian organic industry now worth $2.6 billion and growing year on year.
Consumer Preferences & Channels
65% of Australian households are now buying organic products annually, a rise of 5%. Vegetables, beef, non-alcoholic beverages, fruit, ready to eat foods, nuts and cosmetics/health products are the most in demand items.
Australian organic exports are also experiencing growth, with total export tonnage for 2018 growing by 13% since 2017. Over the last year, 30,155 tonnes of organic produce and products were exported to 61 different countries.
Supermarkets (e.g. Coles, IGA, Woolworths, Aldi) were the most frequented channel among organic shoppers in 2016, with 95% of organic buyers shop for organics in a major supermarket at least 'occasionally' and 41% 'frequently'. ACO report an increase from 2014-16 in consumers shopping in other channels, such a local markets or independents and home delivery.
Fresh Produce was the dominant category in 2016,with home cooking ingredients meat and bread/baked the next most important.
Price remains the biggest barrier, with 76% of consumer citing this in 2016, down from 82% in 2014
The Australian Government has agreed equivalency with the EU Regulation for organic plant based products, while individual certifiers such as Australia Certified Organic have agreed equivalency for other organic categories (such as wine, livestock and product containing imported ingredients) with the EU.
