According to the Asociación Impulso Orgánico, consumer demand for organic products is rising 10 percent annually. No actual total figure for market size is available and little date beyond 2006 exists.
From January to August 2013, exports of U.S. organic products to Mexico were up 75 percent since 2011 and valued at $103 million, on track to exceed the $113 million in U.S. The size of the domestic market currently is difficult to ascertain.
Mexico is a world leader in producing organic coffee, organic tropical and sub-tropical fruit and organic vegetables.
Consumer Preferences & Channels
A growing number of Mexican consumers are pursuing healthier lifestyles which include better eating habits., thus many retail outlets have introduced a variety of healthy and/or organic food products on their shelves. A growing number of consumers that are “green” and making purchasing decisions based on whether the food items are grown in environmentally friendly and sustainable ways.These consumers tend to belong to medium and upper socioeconomic classes and are willing to pay a premium price for these products.
Since organic fruits, vegetables, meat, and milk are substantially more expensive than conventional products, retailers target these products to consumers with high levels of education and high purchasing power.
Organic exports to Mexico in 2012.29 Cheeses, wines, salad dressings, breakfast cereals, and baby foods are among the large quantity of U.S. organic products sold in Mexico.
According to the UDSA in 2011, distribution is a key factor in the success of the organic foods market. Organic packaged products are mainly available in major supermarkets chains like, WalMart, Superama, Soriana, Comercial Mexicana and City Market. The second largest distribution channel is small independent specialty stores such as the Green Corner, and Aires de Campo.
Legislative Considerations
Imported products may be marketed in national markets as organic and with equivalent terms if they comply with the Mexican Organic Regulations and certified by a certifier accredited by Mexico or from a country with organic regulations and control systems recognized as equivalent by Mexico. Imports must be accompanied by an organic inspection document, or its equivalent, granted by the competent authority or body.
