It is unknown what the exact size of the organic market is, though it is small but growing.
Vietnam is focussed on domestic production and exports.
Consumer Preferences & Channels
Health and wellness are main drivers in Vietnam with organics anecdotally becoming more popular. Some big and also frequent food scandals have driven some consumers to seek more trusted products.
Local production is on the increase but is still a fraction of neighbouring countries, and is predominantly for export. Fewer consumers buy from modern retailers or supermarkets, rather from traditional markets than in neighbouring countries.
Figures for the size of the market are not available. It is considered that demand is higher in urban areas, even outstripping availability in some cases. Typical mark ups are double or more the cost of conventional equivalents.
EU organic certification is accepted here. At this point there is no domestic certification standard.
An export certificate is usually required which Soil Association Certification can endorse at no extra cost.
