The Peatland Code

The Peatland Code is the UK standard for peatland restoration projects that are designed to store carbon while giving organisations a way to support nature as part of their climate strategies.

Peatland restoration is an internationally recognised approach to supporting climate‑change mitigation. In their natural state, peatlands offer long-term carbon storage, however due to decades of unsuitable land management practices, the UK’s peatlands have instead become a significant net source of greenhouse gases.

With 80% of the UK’s peatlands currently modified or damaged, the Peatland Code offers an exciting way to capture and store carbon at scale, while also improving water quality and helping to prevent biodiversity loss.

About the Peatland Code

The Peatland Code is the UK’s voluntary certification standard for peatland projects wishing to market the climate benefits of restoration. It also gives landowners the chance to attract private finance to restore peatland.

Peatland Code projects are independently validated and verified, providing assurance to carbon buyers that a project has been assessed as meeting criteria for measurable, additional and lasting benefits to greenhouse gas emissions.

Soil Association Certification is authorised by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) UK Peatland Programme to validate and verify Peatland Code projects.

About us

At Soil Association Certification we use experienced and trained independent assessors to validate and verify every Peatland Code project against high-integrity standards.

Soil Association Certification also validates and verifies the Woodland Carbon Code and Wilder Carbon, and continues to develop new nature market schemes designed to facilitate nature-based carbon removal across a range of habitat-rich landscapes.

You can manage your project through our client portal for a streamlined process which offers access to technical support and resources.
