Wilder Carbon

Native habitats are vital in the fight against climate change due to their ability to store atmospheric carbon. This landmark scheme generates carbon credits through restoring nature at scale in the UK, in line with the Wilder Carbon standard.

Wilder Carbon leverages green carbon finance to restore large areas of degraded land and re-establish natural processes in the UK. Restoring these ecosystems through ‘wilding’ boosts biodiversity and can provide co-benefits for communities, such as enhanced flood prevention.

Developed by Kent Wildlife Trust and validated and verified by Soil Association Certification, the Wilder Carbon standard is designed to support projects that create long-term carbon storage and biodiversity gains.

The scheme also uses a robust process to identify and verify approved UK carbon buyers seeking high quality carbon credits. It assesses whether buyers have processes in place to reduce their own emissions.

Wilder Carbon is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kent Wildlife Trust Group and works with other Wildlife Trusts as well as experts from business and academia to support investment in long-term nature restoration in the UK.

Soil Association Certification worked closely with the Trust to develop a robust validation and verification process. We reviewed the assessment criteria and methods carefully, to determine whether projects meet standards of:

  • additionality: whether the benefits are additional and would not have happened otherwise (for example, if a project happened only because of the carbon credit revenue)

  • permanence: determining how long carbon will be removed from the atmosphere

  • buyer ethicality: whether buyers have responsible practices in place, for example, if they purchase carbon credits only after reducing their own emissions
